Coming Events

First Sunday of each month - NEXT ONE March 2012, 10.30am

Monthly Rainbow Gardening Group Bells Track
Restoration Mornings - weather permitting
(wet day alternative is the following Sunday of each month)

These group events occur on the first Sunday morning of each month and see group members working together on improving the environs around the Bells Track located at the very end of Awarua Street, which starts from the round-about by the Ngaio shops.

This is a really nice quiet area that is in the process of being revegetated, with the track following a beautiful creek up to the Skyline Track from which you can see the South Island looking one way and right across the harbour looking the other. From there another track can be taken to Mt Kaukau.

Member Des has been involved with this project for about ten years and has the blessing of the council to coordinate it. The gardening group’s involvement might even result in getting our group's name on a plaque, raising gay and lesbian visibility. Sometimes we might be working with our heterosexual brothers and sisters.

The forest to be restored is the one that was there prior to the arrival of humans to Aotearoa. Members are planting trees, clearing weeds, spreading mulch and keeping the track clear. If you've ever wanted to plant a tree on some public land or to be involved in a community conservation project, this is your chance. Des will generally be available for advice. People can adopt a spot and do their own thing in their own time or come along on the designated days and join others.

What to bring? If you just want to have a look, meet us and go for a walk (which you are very welcome to do) - good walking shoes and warm clothing in case it is windy at the top. If you think you might like to also pull a few weeds / what-have-you, gloves, loppers if you have them, boots and old clothes would be a good idea.

RSVPs are not necessary, but if we know you were coming we could wait for you before doing any great sojourns up the hill. Just turn up or contact Des and John and let them know you’re coming.
